Introducing On The Go 2.0!
Annie’s longtime favorite bag, On The Go, was due for a refresh and Annie and the team really hit this one out of the park!
On The Go 2.0 is compact, yet still has ample space for the essentials.
Designed with multiple pockets and a secure zipper closure, it keeps your belongings organized and easy to get to. This makes it the perfect companion for shopping trips, travel, and more. The adjustable, detachable strap lets you wear it over the shoulder or as a crossbody bag, offering versatility and comfort.
Keep your passport, money, or name badge secure in the combination zippered/slip pocket on the flap. Lift the flap to reveal a discreet pocket for your ID and credit cards, perfect for quick access when traveling or shopping.
The deep back pocket provides space for your phone, boarding pass, or glasses, ensuring everything you need is within reach.
The interior compartment features three credit card slots and ample space for an
e-reader, small wallet, and other must-haves.
What’s new?
On the Go 2.0 is an update of our popular pattern On the Go, which was first released in 2012.
Just like a new edition of a textbook, this new version of the pattern features improved design and layout, easier-to-follow steps and diagrams, and our newest and best techniques.
Specific changes include:
- Tweaked the size, making the bag deeper — more room for all your essentials!
- Changed the strap size and how it is attached — now you can carry it more securely and comfortably!
- Substituted sew-in magnets for the hook & loop closure — looks and works so much better!
- Eliminated some pockets and changed a number of construction techniques — easier to make and yields a more professional finish!
We have also filmed an Add-On Video for this project. Since the On the Go 2.0 pattern includes a coupon to get the Add-On Video at no charge, we would recommend that you purchase the new and improved version of the pattern.
The Add-on Video covers the following steps:
- V.D: Attach Hardware and Mark Center
- VII.C: Attach ID Pocket C
- IX.A: Attach Zipper Loop to Body Back and Bind

Inspiration from our pattern testers
Thank you so much to our pattern testers, who worked really hard to make sure this pattern was ready for prime time!
Cindy used Stillness in Nature by Denise Burkitt for FreeSpirit Fabrics to create her beautiful On the Go 2.0. We love the soft colors of this gorgeous floral print.
It’s no wonder that Cindy’s sister immediately claimed the bag for her trip to Germany this fall.
Cindy wrote: “It's kind of crazy how much I like the way the ID pocket is made and attached! Very nice.”
Annie says, “I completely agree. That little pocket is one of my very favorite parts of this bag! It makes it so easy to get to my ID and credit card, especially when I’m going through airport security.”
Jan, a longtime ByAnnie pattern tester, made her lovely On the Go 2.0 using fabric by Debbie Maddy of Tiori Designs for Moda Fabrics.
This bag would be equally perfect for wearing with jeans or a cool summer dress!
We love the interesting geometric fabric Anna-Malin chose for her On the Go 2.0. Nicely done!
It looks like she is ready for a shopping trip with her new bag.
On the Go 2.0 includes instructions for using a wide-mouth slider to make an adjustable carrying strap, making it easy to adjust the length. This enables the bag to be worn the shoulder or crossbody.
Jennifer used the Cotton Candy backing fabric from Tula Pink’s Pinkerville line for FreeSpirit Fabrics to make this fun
On the Go 2.0.
Jennifer said she really liked the small vinyl ID pocket under the flap and thought the pattern instructions for attaching it were “really smart”.
On the Go 2.0 includes easy instructions for using our premium clear vinyl to create a convenient, clear slip pocket on the outside of the flap, too.
We love how Jennifer used bold contrasting fabric and zippers to add interest to her bag.
Kim had fun using cork to make her lovely On the Go 2.0. She made a few small changes to the pattern by omitting the clear pocket on the front of the flap, and using a leather zipper pull and uncovered cotton webbing. We love the different look!
For tips on using alternative materials like cork, check out Season 3, Episode 17 of Live With Annie, where Annie was joined by Andrea Johnson of Windham Fabrics. They shared a wealth of information on adapting ByAnnie patterns to use this versatile material.
Check out the fun, bold Oranges print
by the Kaffe Fassett Collective for FreeSpirit Fabrics that Kristen chose for her On the Go 2.0.
Kristen said, “I had fun with the quilting on this one and used a heavy weight cotton thread to make the stitches stand out. I can see this being a very popular bag for cruisers or ladies going to a quilt show.”
We agree and love how the bright bindings and decorative stitching really add interest to Kristen’s bag.
Mandi chose a fun mix of dots and stripes for her awesome On the Go 2.0.
The zippers add a great pop of color!
Mandi said, “This bag went together seamlessly! The illustrations are great,
and the wonderfully-made instructions
left little room for questions.”
Michelle said she had so much fun making this lovely On the Go 2.0 with Homebody by Maureen Cracknell for Art Gallery Fabrics and Holly’s Tree Farm by Sweetwater for Moda. This beautiful bag was made as a gift, and we are sure the recipient is going to love it!
Oona made this cute On the Go 2.0 with fun fabrics by Ruby Star Society.
ByAnnie’s 1” black metal hardware is perfect for these fabrics!
Oona proudly said, “I think this was my first ever bag with no puckers at all in the binding.” Congrats, Oona!
Nyree made her beautiful On the Go 2.0 with Among the Gum Trees from Skye St. Studio’s Native Blooms collection. She also used fabrics by Maywood Studios and Moda’s Grunge.
Nyree says this bag is perfect for carrying two pairs of glasses, as well as keys and credit cards.
In addition to several outer pockets,
On the Go 2.0 also has plentiful interior pockets for organizing various cards and other small items while keeping them within easy reach.
